Position: Director of Nursing

Position Summary:

Heartland Health Center (HHC) is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), which provides affordable and comprehensive primary healthcare and dental care to medically uninsured, under-insured, and low- income individuals and families in Grand Island and surrounding communities.

This position functions as an integral member of the multi-disciplinary health care team assuring that all nursing services are provided in a manner conducive to the individual's scope of practice while assuring quality to those we serve. The Clinical Support Manager assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures to assure compliance with standards of care associated with nursing practices. The position functions as a mid-level manager with all responsibilities that apply to that level of authority.

Essential Functions:

Highly organized with the ability to work independently.

Communicates clearly, concisely and accurately.

Demonstrates an ability to remain calm, perform effectively and professionally during peak periods of activity and emergency situations.

Assures nursing coverage for optimal clinic flow, concise scheduling and understanding of site- specific needs for coverage. This is demonstrated through effective scheduling of staff with prioritized contingency work patterns and abilities to adapt staffing, both incidental overstaffing and understaffing patterns to adjust timely as events or situations change. If need arises, ability to aid in clinic floor coverage.

Works with management and/or designated staff to assure nursing processes continually improve quality in patient care outcomes and ensures patient and staff safety.

Partners with operational staff to implement and maintain an effective and efficient inventory management system that assures adequate levels of medical supplies, facility needs are met, and operational processes are established and maintained in order to support clinical care. This includes inventory control of medications, medical supplies, environment of care issues, and off site supervision strategies.

Demonstrates detailed understanding of clinical policies, procedures, and standing orders and the ability to develop and assure continuity of implementation among all staff.

May work with patients and families to address concerns and grievance issues related to clinical care.

Monitors compliance in maintaining an efficient, safe, secure, orderly and aseptic clinical environment of care for patients and employees. This includes appropriate maintenance, training and use of medical equipment to staff, i.e. autoclaves, EKG/Spirometer, BP monitor etc.

Maintains clinical expertise and competencies to assist in patient care if needed and to assure the delivery of quality health care by being able to perform in all aspects of nursing care services for self and staff under the supervision of this position according to their scope of practice and competency expectations.

Supports diagnostic and E&M coding accuracy, adherence with the corporate compliance plan, attainment of productivity targets, and claims preparation for third party reimbursement

Participates in quality improvement project activities and implementation of process, policy, and procedure changes on a regular basis.

Completes and maintains clear and concise documentation in the patients' electronic health record.

Participates in the evaluation of the effectiveness of care given by medical support staff, identifies problems, guides team members to a solution, and provides support to improve performance.

Must be knowledgeable of Nursing and Health Assistant practices as well as the laws, regulations and guidelines governing MA, LPN, and RN functions in the clinical facility.

Participates in training, orientation, competency assessment and education of new and current employees.

Participates in utilization and risk management activities by ensuring compliance with Infection control procedures and ensuring compliance with JC, OSHA, BPHC, HIPAA and other regulations, approved clinical policies including infection control procedures, safety work practices, financial and personnel policies as well as performance improvement initiatives.

Monitors maintenance of all medical equipment and contributes, as requested, in decisions regarding purchase of new machines.

Participates in information system management, planning, and training.

Demonstrates and upholds expectation of clinical best practices through evidence-based research.

Ability to contribute insight to ensure alignment of organizational mission with needs of medically underserved community

Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with co-workers, and the public using principles of good customer service

Generates innovative ideas and alternative suggestions, while demonstrating an ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing work conditions and/or project requirements

Demonstrates understanding of effective techniques, procedures, and knowledge base relating to supervisory responsibilities.

Establishes standards of performance and effectively communicates expectations for staff and department; consistently achieves goals, meets deadlines and monitors results to ensure timely corrective action if needed. Evaluates staff performance accurately, consistently, and on time. Provides constructive criticism, guidance, and support to improve performance. Develops individual goals and career counseling for staff.

Takes disciplinary action, when necessary, following organizational policies and guidelines.

Manages timesheets and PTO for assigned staff.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Active Registered Nursing License in the state of Nebraska

Current BLS/Healthcare Provider CPR certification

One to three years RN experience

Clinical leadership experience a plus

Prior FQHC or experience serving underserved populations preferred

EHR experience (any system)

Stress level may be high due to frequently dealing with physicians, family members, and other healthcare providers.
