The Motor Vehicle Mechanic is responsible for testing, inspecting, repairing, servicing, maintaining, transporting, and processing / de-processing commercial and/or tactical equipment. This includes associated mechanical, electrical, and electronic assemblies and sub-assemblies to component level.
Responsibilities
- Perform sustainment maintenance for all heavy mobile equipment, including automotive, tactical vehicles (wheels and tracked), construction equipment, and special/general equipment.
- Repair, build, or overhaul major assemblies of internal combustion automobiles, buses, trucks, tractors, etc.
- Work involves most of the following: Diagnosing the source of trouble and determining the extent of repairs required; replacing worn or broken parts such as piston rings, bearings, or other engine parts; grinding and adjusting valves; rebuilding carburetors; overhauling transmissions; and repairing fuel injection, lighting, and ignition system.
- Perform initial, random, and final inspections on equipment submitted for repair or services.
- Test drive vehicles, and test components and systems, using equipment such as infrared engine analyzers, compression gauges, and computerized diagnostic devices.
- Perform the full range of repair and modification work on heavy equipment and military vehicles to include but not limited to commercial, non-tactical, tactical, and tracked vehicles. A few examples of the various types of vehicles repaired are passenger cars, trucks, forklift trucks, warehouse tractors, large missile-carrying tanks, tank retrievers, tanks, and multi-wheel drive vehicles with standard or automatic transmissions.
- Have a full understanding of two and four-cycle engine operation.
- Be able to perform a complete engine diagnosis on all engine systems and components.
- Replace and adjust tracks, road wheels, road wheel bearings, idler wheels, idler bearings, and oil seals; replace suspension arms, torsion bars, stabilizer bars, etc.
- Repair braking systems by repairing hydraulic systems, including master cylinders.
- Repair and adjust power and mechanical steering systems as required.
- Determine nature and extent of repairs required and perform major and minor repairs on engines, power transmissions, transfers, and related electrical, fuel, hydraulic, wheel, and engine assemblies.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of all engine systems.
- Use technical manuals and other publications to identify and order repair parts.
- Operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects.
- Dismantle and reassemble equipment using hoists and hand tools.
- Examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using testing equipment such as compression testers, motor analyzers, test meters, micrometers, and gauges.
- Test overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
- Set up and operate various types of manual and automatic metal forming machines.
- Repair damaged bodies and body parts using hand tools, power tools, cutting torch, and welding equipment.
- Removes upholstery, accessories, and trim to gain access to vehicle body and fenders.
- Bend, shape, and form dented areas to return vehicle to original form.
- Fill depressions with solder and other plastic material.
- Remove damaged fenders, panels, and grills, using wrenches and cutting torch, and bolts or welds replacement parts in position, using wrenches or welding equipment.
- Perform minor acetylene and electric arc welding.
- Straighten bent frames, bumpers, and panels using hydraulic pulling post jack or power press.
- File, grind, and sand surfaces, using power and hand tools.
- Refinishes repaired surface, using paint spray gun and sander.
- May be required to work an uncommon tour of duty including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; or completion of technical courses in service, trade, or craft
- Minimum three (3) years of experience
- Possess and maintain a valid state driver's license in order to drive any customer or company vehicles
- Possess a CDL Class B Preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Skilled in minor acetylene and electric arc welding
- Ability to follow oral and written directions
- Ability to work independently using sound judgment, perform tasks normally associated with vehicle operations, and operate heavy trucks in a reliable manner with public safety in mind
- Experience working on a government services contract Preferred
