Position Summary:
The Registered Nurse First Assistant Certified (RNFA-C) provides, performs, and functions as a registered nurse (RN) First Assistant (FA) or as an additional assistant to the surgeons while assisting pre-operatively, post operatively, and in the operating room, within the scope of the RNFA-C Standards of Practice. Duties while in the operating room consist of assisting in surgical procedures and assisting the surgical team in any other capacity, as necessary. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups

Detailed responsibilities:
MISCELLANEOUS - Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
POLICY - Handles specimens/cultures according to policy and performs sponge, instrument and sharps counts according to policy
TEAM WORK - In collaboration with the health team members in the preadmission, may participate in preoperative assessment and planning for selected surgical patients
DUTIES - Able to perform suturing, preparation of surgical site, draping, retracting, hemostasis, dressing application, manual dexterity, knowledge of procedure, able to follow directions, and able to anticipate surgeon/procedure needs and able to operate stapling devices
ASSIST - Assist OR team with meeting minimal turnover times - to include housekeeping duties, room set up, opening supplies for procedures and assisting RN as needed
PARTICIPATION - Participate in SRMC initiatives such as lean
SAFETY - Active participation in all safety measures i.e. Time Out
PATIENT CARE - Works in collaboration with other health care providers to facilitate communication regarding the patient's plan of care
DUTIES - Performs duties of a perioperative surgical RN when not assigned into the FA role
KNOWLEDGE - Has excellent knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative technique specific to procedures
PRECEPTOR - Precept and proctor First Assist students as necessary for organizational growth
SAFETY - Recognizes safety hazards and initiates appropriate preventative and/or corrective actions to ensure a safe environment for the patient and surgical team throughout the perioperative experience
PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"

Physical Conditions:
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. May require walking or standing to a significant degree or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or may require working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of materials is negligible.
