STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education's mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe's need for cultural and economic well-being. In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.

Responsibilities:

The incumbent of this position will serve as the parent liaison in support of the school. Work involves establishing and maintaining a comprehensive communication/reporting system to ensure that communication between the school, parents, and tribal educational programs is accomplished in a timely and professional manner supporting the social and academic success of the students.

• Provides communication and reporting support to meet the unique needs of students attending school. Visits homes of students documenting facts and related information on problem cases and maintains records of results making referrals as needed.
• Provides emotional support and encouragement as necessary. Coordinates and provides support to set up virtual counseling sessions and in person counseling on school campus advocating for the student when necessary.
• Provides updates and communicates with Principal and Counselor on appointments with counseling programs, student progress, and difficulties that students may be encountering at school.
• Provides assistance to students in need of foster care and are financial assistance in accordance with McKinney Vento Program and Foster Care Policy maintaining documentation of assistance and attending trainings as needed.
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with parents, school employees, other federal and state agencies, and the public.
• Establishes and facilitates parent support groups. Participates in parent conferences as needed. Works with community programs to coordinate and plan cultural family wellness education.

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Associates Degree or 60 semester hours
• (2) years of experience

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

• Must be able to obtain and maintain a background clearance.
• Must obtain and maintain a valid state issued driver's license.

TERM APPOINTMENT-You will be offered a term appointment not-to-exceed (1) contract year. May be extended (1) contract year based on workload requirements and/or program funding.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Good distant vision and ability to read printed material the size of typewritten characters.
• Ability to hear the conversational voice, with/without a hearing aid.
• Must possess emotional and mental stability.

BASIS OF RATING:

  • DRIVING REQUIREMENT: Incumbent may be required, as an incidental duty, to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle, in the performance of duties, therefore, a valid driver's license is required. Incumbent must have a safe driving record within the three-year period immediately preceding submittal of GSA Form 3607 and be able to meet the safe driving requirements of the Bureau of Indian Education.
  • Applicant is subject to a favorable background investigation. This is a Non-Critical Low Risk Position subject to a favorable adjudicated background investigation.
