Job description

Duties Unpacks and stretches parachute canopy, suspension lines, risers, harnesses and packs. Manually cuts out damaged sections or panels and installs replacement. Packs and rigs various types and sizes of parachutes with the exception of personnel chutes. Inspection, modification, repair and packing is accomplished in accordance with general verbal instructions and shop practices. Ensures that completed articles meet requirements for correct dimensions and tolerances, and durability. Uses elongated, pie shaped, pear shaped, donut, large cylinder and half-moon deployment bags each of which requires different working details and procedures. Selects methods, materials and tools most appropriate for project. Requirements Conditions of Employment Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance. Must be able to obtain and maintain a FAA Senior Rigger Certification One-year probationary period required. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Fabric Worker without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform common application of knowledge of the nature and characteristics of parachute canopy material, the harness, lines, risers, pack, hardware and other components in order to judge the need for their repair and/or replacement. I can 1) Use blueprints, drawings, sketches, verbal instructions and manuals to accomplish work; and 2) Selecting proper threads to be used, methods of stitching, and type and size of hems and seams. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Physical Efforts- Stands at worktables to measure, mark and cut materials. Sits for long periods while operating sewing machines or doing hand sewing. Does a considerable amount of stooping, bending and kneeling, and continually uses arms, hands, fingers in pulling and positioning materials, sewing, and using tools such as shears and electric knives. May occasionally work in cramped areas, on ladders and scaffolds, and overhead. Frequently lifts and carries items that weigh up to 30 pounds; occasionally handles items that are consistently heavier and bulkier, and that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts heavier items with assistance. Working Conditions- Usually works in shops or other enclosed areas that are adequately lighted ventilated and heated. Subject to cuts, bruises, punctures, scratches, and other minor injuries or irritation from handling sharp tools and materials treated with special finishes. Dust and lint form fabrics and fumes and odors from glues, preservatives and cleaners are present. Subject to noise from sewing machines. Works on ladders and scaffolds when hanging or installing completed items. Sometimes works outside. May wear protective devices such as safety shoes and glasses, respirators and machine guards.
