Controls Engineer II

As a Controls Engineer II, you will play a vital role in our team, focusing on the design and implementation of control systems for a diverse range of machinery. Your responsibilities will include creating electrical cabinet blueprints adhering to UL508a standards, developing PLC programs primarily using Allen Bradley, and designing HMI interfaces with tools such as InduSoft WebStudio and AB Panel View. Proficiency in advanced motion control, heat and pressure regulation, and data logging is essential. In addition to your technical expertise, you will be actively involved in guiding and supporting less experienced engineers in critical aspects of their roles.

Key Responsibilities:


  1. Programming:

    • Develop PLC programs using various platforms, primarily Allen Bradley.
    • Design intuitive HMIs with tools like InduSoft WebStudio and AB Panel View.
    • Create motion control programs using Delta RMC Tools and Yaskawa MotionWorks.
    • Integrate third-party controls (e.g., oil heaters, robots) and design HMI extensions using programming languages like HTML5, SQL, and VBScript.
    • Design simple Industrial IT networks.

  2. Startup and Testing:

    • Perform initial start-up of new machinery and conduct functionality tests.
    • Tune PID loops for motion controllers to optimize machine performance.
    • Assist with on-site commissioning or training (up to 10% travel).
    • Test sub-system performance and adapt systems rapidly to meet customer needs.

  3. Control Cabinet Design:

    • Create prints for control panels using AutoCAD Electrical.
    • Ensure electrical designs comply with UL508a and ISO 13849 standards.
    • Monitor budget adherence and adapt designs to meet customer requirements.

  4. Design Review and Programming Assistance:

    • Review cabinet designs from less experienced engineers.
    • Share code examples and collaborate with other programmers.
    • Ensure all criteria are met by comparing specifications to design.

  5. Communication:

    • Collaborate with shop leads during project start-ups.
    • Keep management informed of project progress.
    • Meet with customers to discuss control plans and sequencing.
    • Communicate with estimating and sales teams on potential projects.

  6. Service:

    • Provide remote support during machine installation and warranty work.
    • Onsite support may be required for more complex machines.


Reporting/Supervisory Relationships:

Engineer reports to the Electrical Engineering Supervisor or a Senior Project Engineer. This position involves coaching less experienced engineers and collaborating with various teams within the organization.

Preferred Skills:


  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field, preferably Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5-7 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • 7-10 years of industry experience without a bachelor's degree.
