Department Overview:
The Parma Heights Fire Department, located in Northeast Ohio, is committed to providing exceptional fire, emergency medical, and rescue services. We utilize modern equipment and technology to ensure the safety and well-being of our community. Our department comprises 30 members, including a Chief, Assistant Chief, 7 Lieutenants (one dedicated to training and fire prevention), and 21 full-time firefighter/paramedics. We maintain a strong working relationship between labor and management through our IAFF Local , which represents 28 full-time employees.

Firefighters in our department have opportunities to specialize in areas such as fire prevention, fire safety education, fire investigation, technical rescue, water rescue, hazmat, and EMS instruction. Our department is actively involved in public relations activities and responds to approximately 3,800 calls for service annually. We offer promotional opportunities as needed.

City/County/Area Information:
Parma Heights is located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, covering 4.19 square miles. It is bordered on three sides by the City of Parma, with the cities of Middleburg Heights and Brook Park forming the western border.

Job Requirements:
Age: 21 to 40 years at the time of appointment.
Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship required.
Education: High school diploma or GED required.
Driver's License: Valid Ohio drivers license required.
Language: Ability to read and speak English required.
Vision: Must meet the physical requirements as stipulated by the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund.
Prior Experience: Not required.

Ohio Paramedic Certification (prior to appointment)
Ohio Firefighter II Certification (prior to appointment)
Successful completion of the Cuyahoga Community College Physical Agility Test with a time of 4:30 or less (prior to appointment)
Additional Requirements:
All candidates must meet the requirements outlined by the Rules and Regulations of the Civil Service Commission of the City of Parma Heights.

Hiring Process:
Candidates must undergo an extensive background investigation that includes, but is not limited to, driving records, criminal records, alcohol and drug use, financial responsibility, polygraph, psychological examination, and physical examination. Unacceptable conduct in areas such as integrity, discipline, commitment, or reliability may result in disqualification. A stable employment history is required. Candidates must pass a written examination with a score of 70% or higher, successfully complete a polygraph analysis, and pass a psychological examination. Candidates will also need to pass a physical examination, including a medical examination, stress test, and drug and alcohol screening.

Mandatory Disqualifying Factors:
Honesty/Falsification: Any attempt to conceal disqualifying information or provide falsehoods during the selection process will result in disqualification.
Family History: Verified or admitted abuse, non-compliance with financial responsibilities, or violations of restraining orders within the specified time frames.
Employment: Discharge or resignation in lieu of discipline from any public safety occupation.
Military History: Dishonorable discharge or equivalent felony conviction under the Ohio Revised Code.
Traffic Offenses: Any traffic offense that makes the applicant uninsurable by the City.
Gambling Offenses: Recent convictions related to gambling.
Criminal Activity: Fraud, theft, immoral conduct, and related criminal offenses.
Substance Abuse: Recent drug or alcohol abuse.
Extra Credit:
Up to 15% extra credit may be added to the applicants examination score if a passing grade of 70% or higher is achieved.
Military Service: 10% credit for honorable discharge with a minimum of 180 days served.
Bachelors Degree in Fire Science: 10% credit.
Employment: 10% credit for two years of full-time experience as a municipal, state, or federal firefighter.
Bachelors Degree in Other Fields: 7% credit.
Associates Degree: 5% credit.
