The City of Sylvania Police Department is building an ongoing eligibility list for Police Officers that will remain in effect for two (2) years.

Salary Information:
Starting Police Officer wage: $32.82 per hour
Starting Police Cadet wage: $20.61 per hour

Department Overview:
The Sylvania Police Division has a strong tradition of service. The Division consists of 40 sworn and non-sworn personnel dedicated to law enforcement and improving the quality of life in the City of Sylvania.

Area Information:
Sylvania is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, and a suburb of Toledo. With a population of 19,011 as of the 2020 census, Sylvania is located near the State of Michigan, with its northern border forming the state line.

Job Requirements:
Age: Must be between 21 and 42 years of age at the time of appointment
US Citizen: Yes
High School Grad/GED: Yes
Valid Driver's License: Valid operators license required (does not need to be Ohio-issued; officers may reside in Michigan as well)
Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes
Vision Requirements:

No color blindness
No night vision blindness; must be able to see at night
Peripheral vision must be 70 degrees or greater
Vision correction surgery must have been performed over one year prior to the medical examination
Minimum requirements with correction: 20/20 binocular vision; each eye may be up to 20/40
Minimum requirements without correction: 20/100 each eye
College Requirements:

Must possess an associate degree or have completed a minimum of 96 quarter hours or 64 semester hours from an accredited college or university. Transcripts must be submitted.
Academy Certification:

Not required at the time of appointment. However, candidates must successfully complete the Ohio Peace Officers Certification Program within one year of appointment.
Candidates certified as peace officers in Ohio at the time of testing and who pass with a score of 70% or higher will receive an additional five (5) points on their passing score.
Veterans' Preference:

Veterans who pass the examination will receive an additional five (5) points on their passing score. Proof of service (Form DD214) must be submitted.
Hiring Process:
Submit application and transcripts through the designated testing network.
Complete testing with the National Testing Network (NTN).
Undergo a background investigation.
Attend a Chiefs Interview.
If a conditional offer of employment is made, the applicant must pass a psychological evaluation, physical/medical examination, and drug test.
Disqualifiers:
Failure to meet minimum qualifications
Failure to complete testing or submit required documentation by the closing date
Felony arrest or conviction
Domestic violence conviction
Arrest and/or conviction of a theft offense
Current drug usage
