Position Title: Police Officer

The Tallmadge Police Department is currently seeking to fill one Police Officer position immediately, with the potential for additional positions in the near future. To be considered, candidates must complete the following by 12:00 pm on October 9th, 2024:

Submit an application to the Civil Service Department (46 North Ave, Tallmadge, Ohio 44278).
Complete the Frontline National Law Enforcement Exam.
Complete the Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA).
Salary Information:

$32.95 starting hourly rate
$34.19 after 6 months
$36.37 after 1 year
$37.10 after 2 years
$39.94 after 3 years
$40.37 after 3.5 years
(Current contract rates; subject to renegotiation in 2025)

Requirements:

Ability to read, interpret, and comprehend civil, criminal, and traffic laws.
Ability to protect the human dignity and constitutional rights of individuals.
Sensitivity to emotional states of persons.
Safe handling of firearms.
Ability to comprehend oral and written instructions and write narrative reports.
Ability to use tact, understanding, and good judgment in complex situations.
Ability to detect situations that threaten security and safety.
Memory for names and faces, and ability to function well under stress, including handling pressure, hostility, or opposition.
Physical Agility Test Standards:
Candidates must pass a physical agility test as part of the selection process.

Department Overview:
Tallmadge is a growing city of about 18,000 residents located near Akron. It offers excellent schools, strong community support, and various career growth opportunities within the police department. Officers may join specialized units such as the Summit County SWAT Team, the US Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force, or other investigative roles.

Job Requirements:

Age: At least 21 years old and less than 35 at the time of appointment.
US Citizenship: Required.
Education: High school diploma or GED.
Driver's License: Must have a valid driver's license.
Language Proficiency: Must be able to read and write in English.
College and Certifications: Not required.
Prior Experience: None required.
Additional Requirements: In addition to taking the examination and passing the physical agility test, candidates must submit an application for employment to the Civil Service Department by the closing date of testing.

Hiring Process:
Background investigations will be conducted on selected candidates, which will include multiple interviews (integrity, polygraph, panel, and chief interviews). Candidates must pass a physical agility test, and upon receiving a conditional offer, must complete a psychological assessment, medical exam, and drug screening.

Candidates who are currently OPOTA certified and have served as a sworn law enforcement officer in Ohio within the past year may apply through lateral testing requirements.
