FSA Federal (FSA) is focused on delivering unsurpassed services in support of law enforcement and homeland security. We currently have a vacancy for a Paralegal II to support the U.S. Attorney's Office.This position shall provide legal support for the Financial Litigation Unit (FLU) of the Civil Division.A contract paralegal is needed to work with the criminal restitution team to prepare, monitor and assist the Assistant U.S. Attorneys with the ensuing litigation in these high priority criminal cases. A Paralegal II performs, but is not limited to the following duties:
Examines, prepares and processes a variety oftechnical legal and financial documents which are characteristically voluminous and complex in format. Reviews incomingmaterial and independently determines the need for assembly and preparation of a variety of legal documents, e.g., motions, orders, pleadings, and subpoenas. Obtains neededinformation from files, law enforcement agencies, or other sources, and submitscompleted legal documents to the appropriate AUSA or, in Iimited cases, directly to thecourt. In preparation ofdocuments, considers the nature and the status of the caseinvolved. With limited instructions from the AUSA, prepares such legal actions asgarnishments, writs ofexecution, subpoenas, notices. affidavits, proofs of claim, andsatisfaction of judgment. Completes variable aspects ofrecurring legal documents inconformance with the rules governing their style and format.
Provides assistance to attomeys in trial preparation by performing duties such asindependently compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compilingwitness and exhibit lists. Coordinates with the victim/witness specialist to ensureadherence to current Departmental guidelines relating to victims' rights and servicesresponsibilities. Notifies appropriate individuals of victim/witness issues.
Using original and online Iegal resources, verifies citations and statutory referencescontained in legal documents. Ensures citations are complete and consistent with sourcematerial.
Composes original letters that do not require legal interpretations, but do require a goodworking knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology, e.g., transmittal ofpleadings, requests for extensions of time in certain cases, advising of actions taken or
developments in cases referred by other federal departments and agencies, and notices toattorneys representing defendants.
Provides a variety of direct clerical and administrative support assistance servicesto serviced AUSA staff.Receives visitors and telephone callers. Furnishes requested information concerningpending and closed matters and cases, functions and general procedures ofthe office.Determines which mafters should be referred to the AUSA and the urgency of the matter.
Establishes and maintains a variety of files. Searches legal reference files forinformation needed by AUSAs in conducting interviews and preparing correspondence.Assembles exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents from file material. Separates,screens, selects, assembles, and organizes files and records material for disposition ortransfer to records depository in accordance with established procedures.
Performs docketing duties such as opening, updating and closing cases through use ofthe automated case tracking system. As necessary, searches database for requiredinformation.
Enters information into various databases and monitors for continued necessity. Reviews bills and invoices and submits to budget office for payment.
Maintains calendar ofassigned active cases. Tracks filing, hearing, and trial dates, andscheduling conferences and interviews. Develops and maintains suspense syst-euro;m forongoing cases and informs the AUSA ofpending dates and deadlines. Maintains
calendar(s) ofthe AUSA(s), scheduling appointments, interviews, and conferences, andprovides reminders of commitments and court appearances.
Produces a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range ofoffice software applications. For example, assignments may include integrating outputfrom different software types, e.g. tables produced by database applications and chartsand graphs produced by electronic spreadsheet applications, into word processing or desktop publishing text. Products include complicated tables, graphs and charts which maybe incorporated into legal documents or courtroom presentations. Ensures proper format,
spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.
Provides automated litigation assistance to attorneys in trial preparation andcourtroom presentations. Utilizes various software applications and graphics hardwaresuch as scanners and plotters. Prepares documents. charts, and visual materials for use in
trials. Provides technical support e.g., enlarging charts and photographs, duplicatingtapes and videos, and marking exhibits. Requirements A Paralegal II supporting the fact witness process must meet the following qualifications:
At least two years of litigation paralegal experience required; civil practice, including discovery support or financial collection experience is very helpful.
At least one year of experience in automated litigation support.
High School diploma is required and undergraduate degree is preferred.
Knowledge of standard legal citation systems sufficient to perform straightforward legal research and accurately cite check legal authorities.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and analytical abilities.
Familiarity with a variety of computer applications, specifically the Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, etc.).
Ability to proofread documents and format them to accepted legal standards
Experience and familiarity with the drafting, organization and filing of legal pleadings and correspondence.
Ability to work in a deadline driven, fast-paced environment.This position requires U.S. Citizenship and a 7 (or 10) year minimum background investigation.
