Position Title: Lateral Police Officer

The City of Canby, known as "Oregons Garden Spot," is a growing community of over 19,000 residents located 25 miles south of Portland in the beautiful Willamette Valley. Canby is a family-friendly, close-knit community that values its local law enforcement agency and has consistently been named one of the safest cities in Oregon. The Canby Police Department is currently recruiting for a Lateral Police Officer position.

Application Requirements:

Candidates must currently be certified (or eligible for certification upon hire) with the Oregon DPSST as a Police Officer and be in good standing with their current or previous department.
Out-of-state candidates must be certified as a Police Officer and in good standing, having completed an equivalent police academy to Oregon DPSST standards, and completed a Field Training Program, being off probation.
Military Police, Federal Law Enforcement, Corrections, and Parole/Probation do not qualify for this lateral position.
Certified Police Officers are responsible for enforcing federal, state, and local laws, performing crime prevention work, investigations, report writing, and patrol duties. The Canby Police Department has 29 sworn positions, including a Chief and two Captains, and offers opportunities to work in specialized units or teams.

Position Information:

This is a full-time, non-exempt position represented by the Canby Police Association.
The City offers an excellent benefits and compensation package, including PERS retirement, deferred compensation (457 Plan) with up to 2% matching, and various additional compensation opportunities such as Intermediate and Advanced Certificate Pay and Specialty Assignment Pay.
A 5% pay incentive is available for written and oral proficiency in Spanish or any language spoken by over 10% of Canbys population.
Key Responsibilities:

Patrol streets, businesses, and residential areas to enforce traffic and criminal laws, issue warnings or citations, and perform security checks.
Respond to various calls, including traffic accidents, crimes, civil complaints, and family disputes.
Conduct preliminary investigations, gather evidence, and interview victims, witnesses, and suspects.
Prepare reports, testify in court, and perform follow-up investigations.
Maintain effective working relationships with neighboring law enforcement agencies and provide mutual aid.
Engage in crime prevention and public relations activities, such as speaking at schools or community groups.
Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED
Must be at least 21 years of age
U.S. citizenship required
No felony convictions or crimes involving domestic violence
Valid driver's license with a good driving record
Successful completion of a police academy and possession of DPSST Basic Certification
Must pass all phases of the examination process, including written and oral exams, background investigation, psychological test, physical exam, and agility testing
Preferred Qualifications:

Previous college-level training or additional law enforcement experience
Knowledge of the Canby community and surrounding area
Related training, such as first aid, CPR, firearms training, or bilingual skills (English/Spanish)
Physical and Mental Effort:

The role requires frequent mobility, standing, sitting, and the ability to operate a motorized vehicle, including police motorcycles (if assigned).
Duties may involve lifting or wearing equipment weighing over 25 pounds and occasionally assisting individuals weighing up to 200 pounds.
Mental effort includes normal concentration with occasional periods of sustained pressure.
Work Environment:

The work environment involves all types of indoor and outdoor conditions, with potential exposure to violent, combative individuals, those under the influence of drugs or alcohol, mentally ill persons, or those with communicable diseases.
Travel Requirements:

Frequent local travel is required.
