Duties You will start, operate, adjust, stop, maintain, and perform various operational repairs on multiple-fuel (oil and natural gas) power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment. You will use meters, gauges, and computer generated data to determine adjustments or corrections necessary for proper boiler operations or changing load requirements. You will determine the treatment and chemicals to be used to control chemical concentrations, remove impurities and entrapped gases, or stabilize fluctuating water conditions in the boiler. You will conduct various tests of boilers and inspects for leaks, corrosion and pitting. Requirements Conditions of Employment Must be a US Citizen. You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license. You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination. You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal. You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift. You may be required to work overtime. Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Starting, operating, adjusting, stopping, maintaining, and performing various operational repairs on single or multiple fuel power boilers; 2) Maintaining heat exchanges and combustion control equipment for efficient operating condition; and 3) Troubleshoot and determine action necessary to maintain adequate steam production. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. This position requires rotating shift work. The position often requires irregular hours. This position requires exposure to high noise levels. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Works in confined areas in and around boilers and support equipment. The work requires moderate to strenuous effort and long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching. Workers frequently lift and carry boiler parts and chemical supplies weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally items weighing 40 pounds with assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works indoors and occasionally works outside. May be subject to high temperatures, constant noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil, and fumes in the work area; and cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from acids, caustics, hot water, steam, and contact with piping and boilers.
