Job Summary:
The EWP Operations Manager for Engineered Wood Cutting is responsible for overseeing all cutting operations within the distribution facility that specializes in engineered wood products such as Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) and Wood I-Joists.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Directly supervises 5-40 subordinate employees in the distribution facility and assists in the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these employees. May also directly supervise 1 to 3 subordinate supervisors and will carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the company's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems
- Manages all aspects of the cutting operations for engineered wood products, ensuring alignment with production schedules and store demands.
- Develops and implements operational strategies that optimizes cutting processes, reduces waste, and improves overall efficiency.
- Supervises and supports a team of cutting supervisors and operators, providing guidance and resources to achieve operational goals.
- Conducts regular performance reviews, sets goals, and identifies training needs for team members to enhance their skills and productivity.
- Establishes and enforces quality standards for cut products, ensuring compliance with specifications and customer requirements.
- Collaborates with teams to investigate and resolve any product quality issues related to cutting operations.
- Analyzes operational data to identify trends, inefficiencies, and areas for improvement and prepares reports for senior management on cutting performance, waste reduction, and productivity metrics.
- Utilizes data-driven insights to make informed decisions about process improvements and resource allocations.
- Works closely with inventory management, logistics, and sales teams to coordinate efforts and ensures smooth operations throughout the supply chain.
- Engages with the EWP team to ensure that cutting machinery is well-maintained and operating efficiently.
- Leads continuous improvement projects using lean manufacturing and six sigma methodologies to enhance cutting processes and operational performance.
- Fosters a culture of innovation and continuous improvement among team members, encouraging them to identify and implement process enhancements.
- Ensures compliance with all safety regulations and industry standards related to cutting operations and promotes a strong safety culture within the team.
- Conducts safety audits and training sessions to ensure all employees understand and adhere to safety protocols.
- Inspects the team each day to make sure they have proper safety cutting gear on.
- Develops and helps manage the budget for cutting operations, ensuring cost-effective use of resources and materials.
- Monitors expenses and identifies opportunities for cost savings while maintaining quality and efficiency.
- Employs durable, weather-resistant tarps, plastic or lumber covers daily to protect the product from exposure to environmental elements that can lead to weathering, warping, and other forms of degradation that compromise the quality of the materials and ensures tarps are securely fastened to prevent wind from displacing them.
- Uses pallets or racks to elevate materials off the ground to reduce the risk of moisture absorption from the soil and allow for better airflow.
- Conducts daily inspections of stored materials to identify any signs of exposure, damage, or moisture accumulation.
- Removes material from storage and assess whether they can be salvaged, cut or discarded, if showing signs of weathering or damage.
- Places clear signage in storage areas reminding employees of best practices for covering and handling materials to help reinforce the importance of protecting inventory from weathering.
- Provides training to staff on proper material handling, storage techniques, and the importance of keeping materials covered and ensures employees understand the potential risks of exposure can enhance compliance with best practices.
- Implements strategies to utilize leftover or damaged materials whenever possible, such as repurposing them in smaller projects or as filler materials.
- Reduces the costs associated with returns, replacements, and warranty claims by identifying and addressing potential issues before shipment.
- Conducts a detailed visual inspection of the surface of each product to identify any signs of damage, such as cracks, knots, or surface irregularities.
- Confirms that products are packaged securely to prevent damage during transport and uses appropriate materials, such as corner protectors and protective covers.
- Ensures all products are labeled correctly with relevant information.
- Ensures the products being shipped correspond to the quantities, types, and specifications outlined in stores and strategic accounts orders.
- Verifies the stock keeping units (SKUs) on the packing lists match the products being prepared for shipment.
- Confirms materials are in good condition, free from damage or defects, and meet quality standards.
- Conducts visual inspections of each item being prepared for shipment and checks for any visible damage, inconsistencies, or defects.
- Measures the dimensions of the materials (length, width, thickness) to confirm they meet the specifications outlined in the order.
- Cross-references the products against the order details to confirm that the correct SKUs, types, and models are being shipped.
- Assists with developing monthly, quarterly and annual plans with the Distribution Facility manager to meet Company goals for EWP operations and profitability.
- Assists distribution facility manager in analyzing end of day, week and month reports, including daily KPI reports and monthly profit-and-loss statements.
- Assists the distribution facility manager in recruiting, directing, and motivating employees to attain the goals of the EWP facility.
- Responsible for directly hiring employees for the facility as delegated by the distribution facility manager and oversees the new employee orientation training and ongoing training of all employees in accordance with company guidelines.
- Ensures subordinate staff is properly trained and prepared to provide quality customer service and ensures subordinate staff is addressed in a consistent manner regarding performance and attendance expectations for the store and company.
- Assists distribution facility manager in managing human resources activities for EWP facility personnel including managing employees, work schedule planning, and inventory to meet coverage needs and meet labor goals.
- Makes recommendations to distribution facility manager to improve productivity, reduce losses, maximize equipment performance, and improve quality of service for the EWP facility.
- Monitors inventory levels, including inventory valuation and shrink levels.
- Assists distribution facility manager in overseeing yard operations through regular inspections to ensure completion of daily procedures, project completion, good housekeeping, and inventory control. Responsible for overall operation of certain areas of the facility as delegated by the distribution facility manager.
- Ensures proper security measures are in place and carried out by subordinate staff, including regular inspection of the fence line in the yard and is readily available to respond to after-hours alarm calls at the store location.
- Opens and closes the distribution facility as required.
- Assists in maintaining and ensuring compliance with control and audit systems that result in a safe, productive and profitable operation and communicates and educates employees to follow procedures necessary for facility operations.
- Compiles and processes accurate and timely records and reports and makes recommendations for methods to protect company assets and profitability.
- Actively works to assure the safety and well-being of employees, customers and suppliers and complies with all company safety standards, including the store fleet (delivery vehicles, forklifts) are appropriately managed. Ensures that daily inspection reports are completed on all fleet assets.
- Models to distribution employees on compliance with company policies and procedures, including the ethical standards, integrity, and the Business As Unusual (BAU) culture of the company.
- Attends and participates in meetings and company-sponsored training programs as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Must be able to obtain a forklift certification.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages. Read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, trade journals, technical procedures, or contractual documents.
- Write reports, correspondence, and internal communications. Present information and respond to questions from executives, managers, customers, and the public.
