Position Summary:
At Empower, the Director of Data Engineering plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of our data-driven initiatives. This position is crucial in leading the development and implementation of an innovative data analytics infrastructure, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, to support our transition to the Snowflake data lake and Enterprise Data Warehouse. Your leadership will directly impact the company's ability to harness data for strategic decision-making, driving innovation, and achieving our mission of expanding access to quality, affordable medication.

In this role, you will lead a talented team of data engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning. You will oversee the seamless migration of existing data engineering processes to the Snowflake platform, ensuring that business operations remain uninterrupted, and data integrity is maintained. Your expertise in designing, developing, and implementing data pipelines using tools like FiveTran, Lambda Functions, Apache Hop, Data Build Tool (dbt), AirFlow, and PowerBI will be instrumental in supporting cross-functional teams, including Data Science, Analytics, and Information Technology (IT), to achieve broader business objectives.

Ensuring data quality, security, and compliance with industry standards and regulations will be a top priority. You will implement best practices for data governance and metadata management, with a strong emphasis on protecting sensitive information such as Protected Health Information (PHI) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII) in compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations. Your proactive approach to staying current with emerging technologies and industry trends will continually enhance our data engineering processes and tools.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Leads the development and implementation of data analytics and Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) infrastructure strategies, ensuring alignment with company goals and fostering a culture of innovation within the data engineering team.

Oversees the migration to the Snowflake data lake, ensuring a seamless transition with minimal downtime and strong data integrity.

Designs and implements data pipelines and warehouses using tools like FiveTran, Lambda Functions, and Snowflake, integrating with Apache Hop, dbt, AirFlow, and PowerBI.

Collaborates with Data Science, Analytics, and business teams to ensure data engineering efforts align with broader company objectives and effectively communicates with stakeholders.

Ensures data quality, security, and regulatory compliance, implementing best practices in data governance and metadata management.

Continuously monitors emerging technologies and industry trends to enhance data engineering processes and tools.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:
Proficiency in Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud technologies, including Lambda Functions and Batch.

Proficient in programming languages such as Python, R, Structured Query Language, and Scala. Experience in Scrum/Agile methodologies.

Proven ability to lead and inspire teams, with experience in building and scaling high-performing data engineering teams.

Strong problem-solving skills, focusing on innovation and effective solutions to complex technical challenges.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including those in pharmacy operations, marketing, sales, and IT.

Demonstrated success in bootstrapping and expanding high-caliber data engineering teams.

Experience and Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Sciences, or a related field. Minimum of 10 years in data engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.

Experience with dbt, Apache Hop, AirFlow, Snowflake, PowerBI, Tableau, or Looker is highly desirable. Knowledge of Salesforce data is a plus.

Experience or strong interest in healthcare analytics, including pharmacy operations, patient data, and healthcare data management. Familiarity with regulated industry data, including PHI, PII, and HIPAA compliance.

Exposure to AI/ML, including working with ML models, data pipelines, and generative AI technologies. Knowledge of Natural Language Processing, Deep Learning, and Knowledge Graphs is a plus. Experience with AI/ML applications in healthcare or the pharmaceutical industry is advantageous.
