DEPARTMENT: POWER PRODUCTION GAS & OIL FIRED PLANTS
DUTIES: This person is a journeyman in this craft, under general directive supervision of
assigned supervisor.
Directs apprentices, skilled and semi-skilled workers in performing a variety of duties incidental to the operation of a power plant by controlling generator units and related equipment. Controls the electrical output to meet power demands and makes switching operational changes to supply current to feeders, substations, etc. Controls all switching and electrical operations such as the main switchboard, auxiliary, and supervisory controls.
Prepares or directs the preparation of the generating units for operation connecting the unit into the system and adjusting the load, voltage, and accessory regulating equipment as required.
Maintains proper operation of all generating and boiler equipment in the plant, controls the plant switchboard by load, assigned by system operators in regulating the system load requirements by use of automatic control equipment or by normal control as required.
Cooperates closely with system operators in all matters of plant operation and load switching control, particularly in unusual or abnormal operations where special instructions may be required.
Inspects and checks plant, substation, and switchyard apparatus at regular intervals for proper operating conditions. Checks all switching when high tension line or important apparatus is concerned, and assists in restoring services in emergency situations.
Reads and checks entries in station log, maintains recording meters, and records of relay operations; checks water treatment facilities and operations, and recording of information of all station equipment as related to temperature, operation, fuel consumption, etc. Cooperates closely with Maintenance Department, Chemical Department, and Engineering Department in all matters of plant operation.
Provides safety training instructions in the operation of all equipment and is responsible for the general safety of personnel and in administering first aid to injured persons when necessary. Works around and with energized equipment involving hazard and requiring caution and use of safety policies and procedures as established by the Company. Provides instructions and training to apprentices.
Directs apprentices in all aspects of on-the-job training duties as regarding familiarization and cross training of power plant facilities, equipment, and controls. Checks and is responsible for the performance of all established on-the-job training duties with respect to the apprentices knowledge, familiarity, and ability to perform assigned duties.
Performs other related and assigned duties.
