POSITION OVERVIEW:
CentroMed is searching for out next SUPERSTAR ! The WIC Certification Specialists I (WCS) will be responsible for completing all required training. General duties include certifying WIC applicants to assess income, residency, anthropometrics, nutrition assessment and provides low risk counseling via individually or group classes. A WCS refers client to medium and high-risk counseling and other services, documents nutrition education in MIS. As a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, they will educate pregnant mothers and families about the benefits of breastfeeding. The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor will also assist in breastfeeding counseling in normal breastfeeding situations.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts assessment of height, weight, and anemia screening for infants, children, pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women.
- Completes health history and prenatal counseling in MIS.
- Conduct low risk individual counseling using VENA based counseling.
- Collaborates with the Certifying Authority (CA).
- Develop Nutrition Education Classes and other projects such as health fairs.
- Conduct group classes / Review self-paced lessons with participants.
- Determine program eligibility of WIC participants which include income assessment.
- Have participants read and sign Rights and Responsibilities and issue benefits onto the WIC EBT card.
- Explain WIC program and EBT card to new participants.
- Approve special formulas and upload all necessary documents into TXIN. (if formula certified)
- Provides information and promote breastfeeding among peers; addressing specific concerns of expectant mothers, and correcting misinformation which may prevent a pregnant woman from breastfeeding.
- Develops a rapport with moms and assists them in developing breastfeeding goals and strategies.
- Counsels pregnant and breastfeeding mothers on a one-to-one basis.
- Counsels by telephone and makes follow-up phone calls.
- Documents all contacts into TXIN in a timely manner.
- Supports women during a normal breastfeeding experience, identify breastfeeding experiences that are not the norm, and make appropriate referrals.
- Provides support and information to breastfeeding mothers who may need help transitioning into being away from their baby for work, school, or other reasons so that they can continue breastfeeding.
- Answers calls received on CentroMed breastfeeding helpline.
- Teaches use, cleaning, and assembly of breast pumps and expression and storage of human milk.
- Prepares motivational or informational breastfeeding bulletin boards in the clinic.
- Provides participants with written material.
- Demonstrates excellent attendance and punctuality.
- Maintains and stocks lactation room and storage areas.
- Maintains knowledge of the TXIN system; including ability to complete prenatal and breastfeeding questionnaires as well as the issuance and return of breast pumps. This also includes the ability to upload required documents.
- Clinic assignments are flexible. Employee is required to move clinic assignments at the discretion of the Supervisor/Director.
- Will be required to work evenings and Saturdays.
- Abides by infection control policies and procedures as dictated in the Centro del Barrio Infection Control Manual.
- Abides by policies and procedures on hazardous materials as dictated in the Employee Safety Handbook.
- Participates in the agency's Quality Improvement Program.
- Abides by all safety policies as dictated in the Employee Safety Manual.
- All other duties as assigned

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Some college or health care certificate preferred
Experience: Must have successfully breastfed or expressed breastmilk for a minimum of four months and currently or previously on WIC.
- Must complete and pass the State WCS Certification Training Program within 6 months of hire.
- 3 months of in-clinic WIC experience.
- Must be able to conduct an effective client interview.
- Basic nutrition knowledge with a desire to communicate nutrition messages on a daily basis individually or in a group setting.
- Possess basic computer knowledge.
- Must be able to read and write in English, and preferably be bilingual/bicultural.
Work Schedule: Must be available to work outside regular clinic hours, outside of the WIC clinic, and at any WIC clinic location
Other: Must complete the HHS approved twenty-hour peer counselor class once hired.
