DLBA is a naval architecture and marine engineering firm which provides consulting services for the development of a wide variety of boats: fiberglass recreational boats like Mastercraft's Aviara series, and aluminum workboats like the Kayak Express, custom Sportfishing vessels, and high speed motor yachts. We specialize in high-performance marine craft design and engineering yet support all types of vessels and clients from record-setting high-speed race boats to commercial marine tugs and barges Our team is often engaged with research and development projects bringing new technologies to the waterfront.
We are seeking an Assistant Department Manager for our Chesapeake, VA operations to lead the design of steel, aluminum, and composite recreational vessels, commercial ship designs, and U.S. Government platforms from 20' to 250' feet in length.
As the leader of a multidisciplinary design team, you will be responsible for developing functional engineering and/or design products to support all conventional aspects of marine vessel design.
Primary Responsibilities
Direct supervision of DLBA engineering and/or design staff Assign incoming tasks to qualified team members.
Develop and train DLBA staff.
Facilitate mentorship relationships for junior teammates.
Develop and maintain DLBA Procedures & Standards.
Review & approve staff timecards.
Coordinate staff schedule for paid time off.
Manage team workflow to achieve 95% direct utilization for staff.
Manage indirect supervisory responsibilities to achieve 80% direct utilization for self.
Hire staff to match business needs.
Collaborate with project managers to develop task labor estimates. Estimates shall be based on sound professional judgement, knowledge of team strengths, and past performance labor data.
Quality control of team engineering and/or design products, serving as product checker.
Develop work products as an individual contributor
Basic Qualifications
U.S. Citizenship is required and candidates must be able to obtain a secret level security clearance
Education: B.S Degree or Post-High School Technical Trade School.
5 years experience with B.S. Degree marine engineering and/or design or 10 years experience with Trade School Training with marine engineering and/or design.
Knowledge of basic mechanical principles and practice.
Demonstrated working knowledge of engineering and/or design software and tools, relevant and applicable to DLBA team workflow.
Strong oral, written and presentation skills.
Strong time management and organization skills as an independent contributor.
Leadership experience in an engineering design work team.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills as a leader of a collaborative multidisciplinary team.
Must have visual and audio abilities to perform all aforementioned job tasks.

Prior Management Experience
Shipyard or boatyard experience
Professional certificates of competency in applicable CAD software
