Job description

Duties You will operate gasoline, multi-fuel, or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler type traction. You will primarily operate one or more types of heavy equipment on all types of terrain to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth to rough specifications on such projects as breaking new ground for roads, tunnels, or construction sites. You will operate Buses, automotive vehicles, Fuel Truck and MHE (Forklift) in support of operational requirements. You will operate truck tractor, over 26,000 lbs. (GVW); 6x4 driving wheels, manual and automatic transmissions equipped with air brakes, 5th wheel capability to pull semi-trailers of various types to include flat beds, low boys and van bodies. This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift. You may be required to obtain and maintain a current Construction and Weight Handling Equipment Operator certification. You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid Class A Commercial driver's license and the ability to obtain N (Tank), P (Passenger), and T (Trailer) endorsements. Qualifications This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible.The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of an Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by: 1) Operating gasoline- or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment to perform functions such as cutting, moving, digging, grading, and rolling earth, sand, stone, and other materials; 2) Maintaining ditches, road shoulders and beds, and fire lines using such equipment as bulldozers, backhoes, road graders, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments; 3) Operating equipment safely where the work is close to buildings, railroad tracks, power poles, utility lines, trees, drop-offs, rocks and/or other obstructions; and 4) Demonstrating knowledge and skill in rigging methods, and practicing difficult and complex rigging operations. Physical Effort: Heavy physical effort is used in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Because of the location of some of the controls and attachments, the operators are frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions. The work is strenuous because of the generally larger pieces of equipment and the requirement for more frequent adjustments under more adverse operating conditions. Working Conditions: Work is performed in all types of weather, often in an open driver's seat or platform, on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces, and forests. May be exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning. Is subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust. The operation of larger and more complicated equipment in more difficult circumstances increases the exposure to injury, overturning, noise, and vibration. May perform minor maintenance on equipment; for example, checking/refilling fluids, changing filters, lubricates fitting, and makes minor adjustments. May operate other vehicles as workload requires, such as, tractors, wreckers, fuel trucks, large buses, and similar equipment. May be required to act as a rigger or signal person during crane operations. Several vacancies may be filled.
