Responsibilities:
The AVP, Line of Business is a key member of the Corporate Underwriting team and is responsible for portfolio management, including strategy around growth, profitability, and managing forms, rules, rates, and filings that fall within an assigned line of business. The role also includes similar duties for one or more industries. The role will provide strategy and direction to field underwriting activities and be accountable for profit and loss within the assigned lines of business and industries. This role reports directly to the Chief Underwriting Officer.
This position works out of the Glen Allen VA office.
Key functions include but are not limited to the following:
Partners with CUO to develop and monitor the overall plans and objectives of the assigned line(s) of business.
Accountable for all aspects of profit and loss for assigned line(s) of business, including monthly reports to leadership.
Responsible for portfolio management and development, which includes writing and maintaining underwriting guidelines, rules, and forms.
Implements underwriting strategies, both short-term and long-term.
Monitors results, both top line and bottom line, and takes proactive approach in actions, as needed, to maintain or improve overall results.
Guides and shapes underwriting quality assurance, price, rate and exposure monitoring, price adequacy and risk selection across assigned line(s) of business.
Responsible for training and development of profit center employees within assigned line(s) of business.
Assists in the development and implementation of long-term line(s) of business profit and growth strategies.
Monitors competition regularly with consistent feedback and keeps abreast of industry and line of business developments, particularly those which impact his or her area(s) of responsibility.
Conduct file reviews, as required, with feedback on areas of improvement.
Manage overall line(s) of business by analyzing elements including, but not limited to, loss ratio, mix of business, policy count, claim count, severity of losses, premium growth, and return on equity.
Assists with all aspects of filing, writing, and reviewing rates, rules, and filings within assigned line(s) of business and industry(s).
As required, handles complex underwriting referrals that fall inside assigned line(s) of business.
Communicates regularly, proactively, and effectively with all staff, both as a team and individually.
Responsible for handling data calls and reinsurance and treaty review and report-outs.
Within assigned line(s) of business, will monitor and proactively report to leadership on emerging hazards, regulations and legal issues, filings, forms, rates, and rule changes.
Collaborates actively as a team player across other functional areas of the company including actuary, product, claims, underwriting, and sales as well as other operating units outside Berkley Mid-Atlantic.
Qualifications:
5+ years' property & casualty underwriting experience.
3+ years' experience in a similar corporate underwriting or home office underwriting role with advanced book, line of business, and/or industry management.
Proven track record of developing and implementing successful, financially measurable objectives and plans.
Ability to work proactively and collaboratively with colleagues and other stakeholders.
Ability to work and thrive in a results-driven environment.
Bachelor's degree from a 4-year college or university or equivalent; or more than 10 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Valid Driver's license.
Professional designations preferred, but not required.
