Description:

Strategic and Training Support Specialist

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world (representing over 78,000 pilots at 41 U.S. and Canadian airlines) seeks an experienced Strategic and Training Support Specialist for our Tysons (McLean), Virginia office. The Strategic and Training Support Specialist coordinates closely with Strategic Member Development & Resources (SMD&R) department director and staff to provide training programs and curricula to educate and inform Master Executive Committees (MECs) and MEC Strategic Preparedness and Strike Committee (SPSC) program chairs.

They support the committees within the Professional Development Group (Education Committee, Leadership Committee, Membership Committee and its Furlough and Veterans Affairs subcommittees), along with the Strategic Planning Committee (SPC), and the Strategic Preparedness and Strike Committee.

Local travel: 2 - 5%.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant area, e.g., Communications, English, Journalism, or related field, required, master's degree or completion of post-graduate courses in related field preferred, from an accredited college or university; or, the equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in a communications role with ALPA strongly preferred.
  • Ten (10) or more years of combined experience strongly preferred in:
    • Exercising leadership and initiative, ensuring that project benchmarks and deadlines are met while providing pertinent information to all interested parties;
    • Understanding the difference between specific local issues and national Association issues;
    • Foreseeing and avoiding negative outcomes;
    • Learning;
    • Bringing technology, new ideas, and proactive techniques to a role, while adapting and performing professionally during changes in leadership; and,
    • Experience providing strategic training and counsel to leaders, members, and staff involving multiple-program management and program strategy development, preferably including unity building, message development, and persuasive communications.
  • Ability to motivate and lead others in carrying out communication programs to further Association, departmental, and pilot group goals.
  • Extensive knowledge of ALPA policy and structure (ALPA 101) strongly preferred.
  • Initiative and self-starting abilities.
  • Ability to speak publicly in front of staff and members.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with internal staff, line pilots, pilot committees, officers, governing bodies, external contacts, the media, and others, as required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Excel required.

Constantly operates a computer/smartphone/tablet. Regularly required to maintain a stationary position; move about the office and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area; determine what others have said or written; and, converse with others and exchange accurate information.

Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and move about the office and travel (locally, nationally, and internationally). May also include occasional bending, stooping, squatting, and/or pushing and pulling or moving, e.g., to pack, unpack, and/or move cases.

Occasionally required to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve binders, books, boxes, and files up to ten (10) pounds (lbs.). While on travel, could be responsible to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve luggage weighing as much as 50 lbs. (Assistance may not always be available.)
