Job description
Duties You will operate the engine and associated equipment on board small craft. You will navigate and maneuver the small craft with the and without waterborne craft alongside. You will plot a course for navigation and make correction as conditions warrant. You assist ship Pilot, Dock master, and Pier master as necessary in the movement, docking, and undocking of waterborne craft and ships. You will perform ship assist work during dry dock evolutions, taking commands from Ship Pilot and Dock master Requirements Conditions of Employment Must be a US Citizen. Must be determined suitable for federal employment. Must participate in the direct deposit pay program. You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination. Must possess a valid state commercial driver's license for operating government vehicles up to and including 10-ton vacuum truck, 15-ton telescope hydraulic boom truck and forklift. Must be able to become CPR and respirator certified. This is drug test position. Employee must receive a negative reading for substance testing. This position requires incumbent to have a Class B CDL w/ tank, hazard and air brake endorsements. Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: 1) Knowledge of all types of oil & an in-depth understanding of the details and techniques used to recover each of the several types of oils ranging from heavy oil used aboard naval and commercial vessels to highly Volatile aviation fuels 2) Ability to know all the technical aspects of recovery of oil from water as well as land 3) Comprehensive knowledge of the maritime protocols including navigation lights, fog signals and day shapes appropriate for various conditions and proper action of stand-on and give-way vessels, good seamanship practices and current U. S. Coast Guard regulations pertaining to safe boat operations 4) Must have knowledge of vessel capabilities and local wind and sea condition to determine when to cancel scheduled tows 5) Ability to perform operator tune-up and maintenance to mechanical and electrical equipment and recognize improper operation in order to secure timely repairs or adjustments.
