If this sounds like the choice you want to make, then choose MITRE-and make a difference with us. MITRE's Expeditionary Department (N234) in Quantico, VA is seeking a Group Leader. The successful candidate will lead a diverse team of engineers and technology professionals dedicated to assisting the United States Marine Corps as it transitions back to its Naval Expeditionary roots. The focus of Group Leaders in the Expeditionary Department is its people! The professional selected to lead this group will be responsible for all aspects of personnel management including professional and technical development, performance management and evaluation, project and task staffing, partnering with the department manager and chief engineer on recruitment, training, and department strategy, addressing absence management and pay-related issues, and being the first point of contact for group member questions and concerns. Roles & Responsibilities: Direct supervisor (DS) for 7-9 assigned staff and interns, providing technical support, conducting regular performance and development conversations, staff advocacy and recognition, and communication with Project/Task Leads on performance. Serves as the main point of contact for new employee onboarding and as a resource to guide staff in navigating the MITRE organization and processes. Partnering with Project Leaders to identify appropriate project opportunities where staff can leverage existing skills and continue to develop new skills.
Helping staff craft impactful goals that will challenge them to focus on opportunities to increase their relevance and impact.
Working to ensure staff contribute to and are accountable for customer outcomes while maximizing employee potential, motivation, and engagement.
Ensuring staff are increasingly involved in project work and learning opportunities that align with career aspirations and development plans.
Soliciting and providing regular feedback to staff to help them grow.
Managing challenging interpersonal dynamics and performance concerns among employees in their group, their colleagues, and the project leaders they support.
Being the first-line supervisor and primary point of contact on human resource matters for the employees in their Group (to include participating in the annual performance and compensation cycles for their employees by assessing performance and recommending salary adjustments and promotions). Basic Qualifications: Typically, Bachelor's Degree and 10 years of related experience; or 8 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 5 years' experience.
Active DOD Top Secret level security clearance; able to obtain a DOD TS/SCI clearance
Ability to coach, mentor, and advocate for all levels of staff
Excellent written and verbal communications skills
Ability to formulate group-level and department-level goals, and persist in their execution until those goals are achieved
Desire to develop early career staff and guide them to navigate career options/paths at MITRE
Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the department's key technical areas:
Radio frequency engineering (especially HF, SATCOM)
Data science/analytics/operations research
Cyber operations (offensive and/or defensive)
Digital Engineering/Model-Based Systems Engineering
Communications systems/infrastructure engineering
Agile management and execution (especially using SAFe methods)
Command and control systems (architecture, systems integration, data management)
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site presence.
Preferred Qualifications: Active TS/SCI
Significant experience in Navy/Marine Corps operations, acquisition, and/or engineering/technical domains
Demonstrated knowledge of MITRE project execution/management tools & processes
Prior group leader, task leader, or similar leadership experience
