Behavioral Health Wellness & Prevention Services concentrates efforts on the reduction of risk factors related to adolescent use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) by increasing the protective factors associated with healthy family, school and peer relationships. We strive to empower individuals and families towards healthy lifestyles through education and community resources focused on addressing known risk factors. Are you dedicated and compassionate about bringing awareness to adolescent youth, parents and influential adults to empower them with positive and healthy decision making when it comes to drug education, suicide awareness or mental health? The City of Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is seeking to hire a Behavioral Health Educator I for our Prevention Program.
The ideal candidate will be a Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS), Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC), Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP), Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) or Certified Teaching Certificate; and have experience working in the behavioral health or substance abuse field working with youth in a school or community setting, experience providing trainings/presentations, and experience with adult and or youth coalitions.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in developing and implementing prevention programming to include youth and adult drug education, mental health and suicide awareness, bullying, coalition development, merchant education, or other programming as assigned.
- Assist with the facilitation of the Virginia Beach school-wide K-12 Substance Abuse Intervention Program (SAIP) at Renaissance Academy, Virginia Beach's Alternative School. May include classroom facilitation and management, data collection, facilitation of parent meetings, and updating drug information for staff and students on the harmful effects of drugs.
- Assist with providing orientation or information to parents, teachers and school administrators when requested.
- Educate the community about alcohol, marijuana, nicotine, and other drugs.
- Versatile in presentation skills to meet the needs of consumers and the community.
- Attend monthly Youth and Community Action Team (YCAT) coalition meetings and work to create and implement data-driven strategic plans.
- Participate in community conferences and events addressing drug education, suicide awareness, mental health, or targeted areas in the Evaluation Roadmap.
- Present to various community organizations including, but not limited to, Virginia Beach Public Schools, community agencies, churches, and civic groups.
- Recruit local stakeholders into prevention coalitions.
- Create and maintain relationships with community partners.
- Utilize SAMHSA's Strategic Prevention Framework to engage community partners to identify and mobilize resources to promote city-wide health and support substance abuse prevention initiatives and campaigns.
- Comply with the State Performance contract mandate to include 20 hours of Prevention specific training as required to meet the standards of their profession.
- Provide qualitative and quantitative data on prevention efforts via electronic reporting systems and in cooperation with the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS).
- Follow grant initiative specific requirements based on funding such as established number of trainings, completion of satisfaction surveys, number of participants or activities, etc.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm with occasional evenings / weekends
