Job description

Purpose: The Communications Technician is part of a small Communications team that operates and maintains a unique, state-of-the-art USN secure communications system aboard vessels. At sea, the Communications Technicians operate and maintain USN secure communications systems. Ashore, the Communications Technician performs communications system maintenance, and also provides technical support for non-communications-related systems. Primary Duties (at sea):
- Operate and maintain a unique USN secure communications system aboard ship.
- Verify that communications systems are configured properly and operationally ready at all times. - Operate all communications systems during normal op's and during periods in which the vessel is in Emissions Control (EMCON) status. - Coordinate all communications activities with the Communications Supervisor, the Mission Director (MD), and other members of the mission team as required. - Conduct any needed troubleshooting or repair to the communications system. Use tech manuals and drawings as needed to assist with troubleshooting and repairs. - Document all technical issues and any needed and potential improvements in system architecture and/or procedures and communicate these to the Communications Supervisor. - Travel is expected to be approximately 4 months (non-continuous) at sea per year in 30-45 day op's periods. Secondary Duties (ashore) - Perform system maintenance and update documentation - Participate in Mission Planning activities. Specifically, coordinate communications operational planning among mission planners, management, the Sponsor, and USN communications service providers. - Review tech manuals and drawings for accuracy and completeness. - Develop any needed work packages to make modifications or improvements to the communications system or procedures and work with other members of the staff to get such work packages approved and implemented. - Implement the annual maintenance plan and the readiness verification plan. - Document Sponsor-required work items and provide on-site support during shipyard availabilities, maintenance period, or voyage repairs as needed. - Provide support to other technical teams and mission planning teams as assigned. Provide technical support for non-communications-related systems as needed. Specific tasking will depend on the candidates' skill and interests, and any needed training will be provided. - Travel may be required for visits to shipyards, vendors, mission partners, etc. but this travel is typically of short duration. Reporting Relationships: - At Sea: reports to the Communications Supervisor - Ashore: reports to the Communications Manager. Qualifications: Required - High School diploma or equivalent - 5-7 years of experience in USN secure communications system operations and maintenance. - 1-2 years of experience as a Communications Security (COMSE) and/or Electronic Key Management System (EKMS) user or manager. - Current, active DoD Secret clearance, with the ability and willingness to obtain a Top Secret Clearance, - Ability to read, interpret, and use technical documentation such as Technical Manuals, Schematics, and Drawings. - Good Verbal and written communication skills - Working knowledge of common office tools such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. Desirable: - Systems Administrator (SYSADMIN) experience - Familiarity with the Commercial Broadband Satellite Program (CBSP) and the Global Broad cast Service (GBS) systems. - College degree in a technical field - Current Top Secret Clearance Company Description ASI has one of the lowest employee turnover rates in our industry We attribute our retention success to factors that include: - Technically interesting and challenging project work - Project work relevant to the missions of our government and commercial customers, - Competitive salaries - World Class Total Benefit Package, - A corporate culture that promotes the welfare and development of our employees.
