Job description

The Case Manager of Tenancy and Life Skills provides comprehensive case management services to homeless youth who are pregnant or parenting. They perform Landlord related tasks and create life skills curricula and opportunities to increase the self-sufficiency and stability of the young families they serve.

The Case Manager of Tenancy and Life skills collaborates with clients and the Case Manager of Housing, to reduce barriers related to maintaining housing and transitioning to permanent housing, utilizing the clients self-identified goals.

Reports To: Manager of Transitional Living Services

Schedule: On-site Monday through Friday 9:00AM to 5:30PM

essential duties

Program Delivery

  1. Initiate and utilize youth voices across service delivery.
  2. Utilize a healing-centered, trauma-informed, strengths-based approach when working with clients.
  3. Provide positive youth development, housing first, harm reduction services to clients.
  4. Contribute to a positive and affirming community atmosphere and model healthy conflict resolution.
  5. Attend house meetings and tenant council if requested by clients and all staff meetings as necessary.
  6. Provide written daily and weekly notes and client and program updates to other program employees.

Landlord Related Tasks

  1. Collect income verification from clients and complete accurate monthly rent determinations.
  2. Process rent waivers, reductions and payment plans.
  3. Collect rent and other fees monthly from clients and keep accurate and thorough written records of all transactions.
  4. Collaborate with Case Manager of Housing to process rent waivers, reductions and payment plans.
  5. Conduct regular unit inspections and respectfully coach clients on maintaining a clean and safe home.
  6. Maintain proper documentation of all unit inspections and the feedback provided to clients.
  7. Oversee timely unit turnover, including the bagging of personal possessions for storage, cleaning of the unit, basic maintenance needs and submit facilities request within 7 days of unit vacancy.
  8. Facilitate quarterly organization of storage, including donating or disposing of abandoned belongings.
  9. Model responsible landlord practices by conducting move-in and move-out walk through and inspections.
  10. Oversee facility safety and cleanliness and model how to perform basic household maintenance.
  11. Coach clients on how to complete accurate maintenance requests utilizing the facilities ticket system.
  12. Monitor all maintenance needs to ensure completion within the established timelines.
  13. Collaborate with clients to ensure individual units and communal spaces are appropriately deep cleaned on a regular basis.
  14. Maintain an updated inventory of furniture and identification of furniture needing to be repaired and/or replaced.
  15. Ensure the overall cleanliness of the facility by monitoring and assigning ongoing chores to clients.
  16. Ensure security systems are always operational and video surveillance is reviewed as needed.

Life Skills Tasks

  1. Create innovative life sills curricula for use in house meetings, group projects and individual meetings, to support clients in increasing self-sufficiency.
  2. Teach life skills to clients on an individual and group basis, including emotion regulation, positive coping skills, career planning, interpersonal communication, daily living, household planning and upkeep, housing and money management, self-care, social relationships, employment, study skills, etc.
  3. Create a monthly calendar of planned house activities, outings, service-learning projects, etc. Ensure all clients are aware of these events and reduce barriers to engagement through regular communication and identification of new and effective methods to inform clients about these events.
  4. Assess life skills proficiency of clients at intake, quarterly and upon exit, to inform and target areas of improvement.
  5. Collaborate with clients to identify life skills goals in conjunction with the Independent Living Plan created by the Case Manager of Housing. Assess progress and mastery of the identified life skills goals.
  6. Consistently utilize an evaluation tool for life skills classes and implement a system for gathering and incorporating feedback from clients to improve the services.
  7. Collaborate with clients, and Case Manager of Housing to support the development and mastery of life skills, as well as coordinate donation needs.
  8. Provide resources and referrals to clients for life skills needs, such as interview clothing, budgeting, education, transportation, legal services, etc.

job requirements

a. Education and Experience

  1. Bachelors degree in a human-service field preferred.
  2. Minimum of 2 years of relevant working experience, including supporting youth, young adults and families experiencing homelessness.
  3. Experience developing and/or providing life skills training and curricula.
  4. Experience managing projects.

b. Additional Requirements

  1. Must satisfactorily pass criminal history check.
  2. Must satisfactorily pass tuberculosis (TB) test.
  3. Must have reliable transportation and a valid Washington State driver's license (or be able to obtain one by date of employment).
  4. Employees and volunteers who operate their own or Friends of Youth vehicles on Friends of Youth business, must have a safe driving record as defined by Friends of Youth.
  5. Employees and volunteers who operate their own vehicle(s) on Friends of Youth business must carry auto liability insurance that complies with the requirements of Friends of Youth.
  6. Must successfully complete the following health certification requirements within 30 days of employment: CPR, First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens.
  7. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required. There are no exemptions.

  10. Basic knowledge of Landlord-Tenant Law.
  11. Able and willing to travel to multiple local sites and other locations in personal vehicle (mileage reimbursement provided).
  12. Proficient skill set with Microsoft Office programs.
