Description

This position will have a focused emphasis on the Van Drive Division duties as outlined below.

GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of clerical, administrative and program work in the planning and administration of a variety of programs, activities and transportation for senior adults, including assignment as senior center cook.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the day to day supervision of the Senior Center Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None. May assist in coordinating the work and training and mentoring less skilled employees, temporary employees and volunteers assigned to the division.
Duties

GENERAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phones, types correspondence, runs errands, picks up supplies needed for activities, arranges for rental and use of departmental facilities, helps set up tables and chairs for classes, meals, etc. Assists and administers classes, workshops and activities for persons engaged in senior center programs, activities and co-sponsored programs. Registers patrons and collects fees for a variety of classes or activities.

  • Performs work in a timely and professional manner.
  • Interacts courteously with citizens, customers, vendors, the public and other employees.
  • Responds to inquiries concerning services of the Senior Center.
  • Tracks the hours of volunteers and community service workers and reports hours worked to the appropriate agency.
  • Maintains electronic and paper attendance records, patron files and other related information.
  • Assures that the Senior Center is maintained in a clean, orderly, and safe condition; assures proper cleaning of tables, chairs, and equipment; notifies Manager of building repairs as necessary.
  • Interacts with seniors by listening to their concerns and refers them to other staff members when appropriate.
  • Facilitates involvement and interaction of volunteers with seniors and utilizes volunteer staff according to program needs.
  • Provides a safe environment for program participants.
COOK DIVISION
Prepares and cooks meats, soups, gravies, sauces and vegetables; Roasts, steams and fries food items; Assembles ingredients and blends in accordance with the recipe instructions;
Measures, sifts and mixes ingredients for different types of baked goods; Prepares desserts and cuts for individual servings; Places and serves food on plates and inspect for portion and quality control; Wraps food for home delivery when needed; Maintains food service facilities and equipment in a clean and sanitary manner; Washes, dries and stores dishes and utensils daily; Researches new menu ideas and provides recipe planning; Assists Senior Center Manager with development of monthly menus; Assists with inspecting and storing of food and supplies and producing reports; Assists Senior Center Manager with the ordering of kitchen supplies, purchasing and/or returning of kitchen related items as assigned.

VAN DRIVER DIVISION
Drives passenger vehicle to and from events safely and in a timely manner; Coordinates daily pick-up for seniors participating in recreational and/or social service programs; Plans, coordinates and escorts seniors on special trips; Assists senior adults with packages and getting on/off the bus; Maintains the bus including: fuel, interior cleaning and scheduling of routine and periodic repairs; Records and reports mileage on a monthly basis; Provides a safe environment for program participants.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES
Assists in the preparation a variety of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases, flyers, monthly menus, and related communications regarding senior center programs; May serve as a member of various City committees; May be assigned to deliver meals as part of the Senior Center's food program; Provides backup to related positions as needed.
Qualifications

GENERAL DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  1. High School graduate or equivalency; and
  2. One to two years of related experience in an office setting performing clerical and support work. Experience in senior center or recreational programs preferred but not required; or
  3. Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the necessary qualifications to perform the essential duties of the position.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess Washington State Driver's License (a Class B CDL with passenger endorsement is preferred for those driving the Passenger Van) and a driving record acceptable to the City and the City's insurance carrier; Current CPR/First Aid certification; Must be at least 18 years of age; Ability to work a varied schedule with possible evenings and weekends; and Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid food handler's permit within 10 business days of hire. Must maintain food handler's permit for duration of assignment as Cook.

General Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Senior Center program needs; knowledge of the Bonney Lake community, area and streets; knowledge of general office practices; knowledge generally accepted practices of public relations, customer service and records management; and
  • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment; and
  • Ability to maintain accurate records; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with senor citizens, employees, supervisors, other agencies, program participants, instructors, and the general public; ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule; ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions; ability to perform light to moderate lifting; ability to work well and relate to senior adults and volunteers; ability to respond and react effectively to emergency situations, which might include life saving techniques to aid program participants; ability to make basic mathematical calculations and to balance cash drawers and receipts.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Specific, But Not Exclusive to Cook Position:
  • Considerable knowledge of modern methods of food preparation and serving foods and beverages in large quantities; knowledge of the principles of sanitation including health and safety practices and proper cleaning methods; knowledge of institutional kitchen utensils and equipment; and
  • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment; and
  • Ability to make basic mathematical calculations and modify recipes for large quantities; Ability to maintain accurate records; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisor and the public; Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule; Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions; Ability to perform light to moderate lifting and to stand for long periods of time.

  • Personal computer, including word processing, database, spreadsheets and publishing programs; 10-key calculator; copy and fax machine; multi-line phone; Fourteen (14) passenger bus; gas card.
  • When assigned to Cook position: Gas range and stove, griddle, grill, steam table, salad bar, refrigerator, freezer, ice maker, dishwasher, garbage disposal, meat slicer, mixer, food processor, coffee maker, microwave, toaster, waffle iron, various cooking utensils and knives, mop, broom and cleaning solutions.
