Palliative Medicine opening in Wisconsin
Health System is hiring a physician to become a collaborative member of the Department of Palliative Medicine and Hospice in La Crosse, WI. The largest portion of the job will be Hospice, while also providing rotating coverage of the Palliative Care Hospital Consultation Service, as well as possibly a small portion of ambulatory clinic. Palliative Care hospital and clinic responsibilities are within the La Crosse region, while the Hospice service area covers a larger geographic area and has an average daily census of about 150. The physician hired will be the sixth physician in the department, which spans two regions of western Wisconsin. Teaching responsibilities are inherent to the role, and academic appointment is expected.
Job Responsibilities:
- Provide Hospice Medical Director coverage on a rotating basis, with potential to become the primary Hospice Medical Director
- Participate in inpatient Palliative Care Consultation Service
- Collaborate with the primary service, other consultants, and the interdisciplinary team to contribute to the patients plan of care
- Facilitate clarification of patient and family goals of care
- Provide expert physical and non-physical symptom assessment and management
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings
- Appropriately document patient care services to support professional billing
- Participate in interdisciplinary ambulatory Palliative Care clinic
- Serve as supervising physician for Palliative Care Service nurse practitioners and physician assistant
- Collaborate with other departmental physicians in shared call schedule for hospice coverage, as well as palliative care call coverage if it were to commence
- Participate in Quality Improvement initiatives
- Provide Palliative Care education for staff, colleagues, students, and community, as indicated and appropriate
- Adhere to the practice of confidentiality regarding patients, families, staff, and the organization
- Remain open to performing other duties as requested

Professional and Ethical Considerations:
- Commitment to covenantal physician-patient relationship and whole-person care
- Commitment to not participate in physician-assisted suicide or euthanasia
Qualifications
- Candidates must be board-certified or board-eligible in Hospice and Palliative Medicine
- Fellowship training in Hospice and Palliative Medicine is expected, though exceptions may be considered for candidates with clearly demonstrated skill and experience
- Mmust possess DEA registration or obtain it upon hire
- Must have current licenses to practice medicine in the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota or obtain them upon hire
