Job description
Job Responsibilities:
Position Summary: R esponsible for the oversight of all agency accounting activities. Lead all day-to-day accounting operations and supervise a staff of various financial professionals. Ensure that all financial practices, systems and internal controls are in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. Work closely with WCS leadership and their staff to educate them regarding accounting procedures, as well as explore how the accounting functions can support program operations.
Essential Functions:
- Use established accounting practices to consistently ensure timeliness and reliability of financial information.
- Assist with maintenance of internal financial controls and safeguards for all programs.
- Supervise accounting staff and activities, including but not limited to general ledger accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and grants administration.
- Analyze and interpret financial data with a view toward identifying, explaining and correcting variances as appropriate, and recommend changes to improve systems and financial performance.
- Meet regularly with WCS leadership to review financial status of programs.
- Responsible for oversight of all accounts, ledgers and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
- Lead the development and monitoring of budgets, forecasts and financial plans.
- Responsible for oversight of all financial, project/program and grants accounting. Ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period. Ensure accurate and timely reporting to all funding sources as required.
- Perform periodic internal audits in order to monitor and confirm financial condition and ensure compliance with internal controls.
- Provide training, guidance and direction to employees to ensure work is performed in an efficient, timely and knowledgeable manner. Evaluate departmental performance and make adjustments to daily operations when needed to ensure the department meets overall goals and objectives.
- Oversee preparation of federal and unemployment quarterly reports, state payroll reports, W2s, and 1099s.
Job Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of and adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and specifically non-profit accounting principles and applications.
- Advanced skills in working with Excel spreadsheets and accounting software.
- Highly proficient in utilization of Microsoft Office and other business software.
- Familiarity with Office of Management and Budget (OMB) operating and reporting requirements.
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize and delegate responsibilities in an effective and efficient manner.
- Knowledgeable in financial data analysis, budgeting and forecasting.
- Ability to conceptualize project funding structures.
- High level of emotional intelligence and maturity
- Expert problem solver and analytical thinker.
- Excellent communication skills, both orally and written.
- Ability to manage a department and supervise staff.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of Bachelors degree in Accounting or Business Administration required
- CPA and / or advanced degree in business-related field strongly preferred
- 5+ years of relevant accounting experience
- 3+ years of experience working in a nonprofit environment
- Previous experience supervising and leading a team is desired

Work Relationship and Scope:
Reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and works closely with CEO, Vice Presidents and Administrators. Supervises Accountants, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll staff. Interacts with funding sources, employees, supervisors, program directors, bankers, outside vendors, and auditors. Must be able to work both independently and from a team approach.

Working Conditions:
Professional office working environment. Required to enter data into computing devices via keyboards. Work is performed while sitting for extended periods of time with the ability to move about at will.
Physical Demands:
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle objects and controls. Must possess hand and finger dexterity for data entry.
