Position Summary: This position is responsible for defining Contract Requirements as related to all acquired Ship Design and Build Projects, Conversions and Repair projects as well as those for which proposals are to be developed at our vast, 63-acre facility. Significant heavy manufacturing takes place both in several fab shops, as well as on the waterfront. The successful candidate will support the 1,000+ working men and women on our waterfront by defining department resources needed to meet the departmental commitments; coordinate the departments' personnel to achieve said commitments; assume various high level roles within the department as required including, but not limited to bid and proposal development.

Detailed Description:

  • Follow and promote FBS Safety Policy.
  • Abide by, and enforce, all organizational policies and procedures.
  • Establish resource requirements as needed to support FBS business goals.
  • Establish, develop, modify, maintain and measure departmental capabilities so as to support FBS business goals as related to Engineering Efforts.
  • Develop and maintain training programs for the engineering group.
  • Develop and maintain standard departmental processes.
  • Lead/sponsor continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Mentor direct reports.
  • Select and hire/terminate employees.
  • Lead meetings with Engineering personnel, as well as various other departments, to establish and support FBS efforts to achieve business goals and objectives.
  • Lead/attend meetings with internal and external customers, as well as regulatory agencies and engineering subcontractors.
  • Report department performance to FBS Senior Management.
  • Interface with all FBS departments as required to ensure engineering group deliverables are adequately supporting production.
  • Establish and maintain overhead budgets associated with the operation of the department.
  • Participate in development of bids and proposals.
  • Manage the coordination and overall integration of technical activities in engineering projects.
  • Direct, review, and approve project design changes.
  • Present and explain proposals, reports, or findings to customers.
  • Consult or negotiate with customers to prepare project specifications.
  • Ability and willingness to engage in highly energetic pursuits on the waterfront.
  • Maintain a commitment to and promote the Quality and Environmental, Health & Safety Policies.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises 5 to 40 employees. Oversees subcontract engineering performance. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding's policies, and procedures. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree and 10-20 years of relevant experience OR 4 Year Degree in field of competence and 15-25 years of relevant experience OR 2 Year Degree and 20+ years of relevant experience
  • Must exhibit the capacity to manage a large departmental workforce by motivating and disciplining individuals as required to achieve Engineering Department Goals and Objectives.
  • 15 Years of Supervisory Experience
  • Experience using 2D and 3D CAD software to an intermediate level
  • Current computer skills relevant to the field of competence to include Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook & PowerPoint
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Desired Qualifications:

  • Additional supervisory and/or management degrees
  • Technological skills proven by verifiable and specific work experience, technical publication, or patent issue
  • Six Sigma or LEAN training desired
