Founded in 2014, Bicycle Transit Systems (Bike Transit) is a woman-owned business that operates and manages bike share programs nation-wide along with our customer service call center. Our mission is to operate bike share systems that create connections in our communities and protect our planet. We are currently looking for a dedicated Product Engineering Manager to join our Product Team in Waterloo, WI!
The Product Engineering Manager is a leadership role within the product team, reporting to the Director of Product. The Product Engineering Manager is responsible for managing and guiding our product engineering team in the design and development of innovative bike share products that align with our business objectives and meet industry standards. This is a "hands on" position that will not only manage, but also contribute to the design and development of the product. The Product Engineering Manager plays a critical role in shaping the product roadmap, defining technical requirements, and assessing project feasibility, cost, and timeline.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with company leadership to identify, define, and scope new products and projects.
- Develop and oversee product budgets, in coordination with leadership, tracking expenses monthly to meet financial targets.
- Build, manage, and develop a team of engineers and designers.
- Organize product engineering team to design and develop planned products.
- Establish team processes for new product development and product support projects.
- Establish testing standards and enforce compliance with safety standards and industry regulations.
- Identify and engage with contractors for prototyping, testing, and other engineering work, as required.
- Track project progress and organize the team to deliver projects on time.
- Communicate project updates including scope, cost, and timeline changes.
- Collaborate with the software development team to build monitoring, reporting, and analysis mechanisms for new products.
- Organize and manage the product engineering workspace to support safe and effective development and testing.
- Lead team in creating and maintaining product information in a product lifecycle management tool.
- Guide the supply chain team through supplier qualification, production line setup, and production line support.
- Evaluate product quality from manufacturers and recommend improvements.
- Facilitate continuous improvement based on testing results and user and operator feedback.
- Work with the supply chain team to reduce product costs.
- Stay informed about industry trends relating to product development, engineering, bikes, micromobility, etc., fostering a culture of innovation at Bicycle Transit Systems.
- Conduct hiring, training, and performance reviews, ensuring clear and timely feedback.
Undergraduate or graduate degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related engineering field.
- Strong foundation in mechanical and electrical engineering, systems integration, industrial design, and prototyping, enabling effective oversight of technical development across disciplines.
- 10+ years related experience.
- Product development experience from design through manufacturing.
- Entrepreneurial spirit, ability to come up with new ideas, and thrive in a flexible and constantly changing environment.
- Experience working in the micromobility, cycling and/or urban transportation infrastructure industries.
- Domestic travel may be required up to 10% and international travel may be required 1-2 times per year.
- Required standing or sitting for several hours straight at a time.
- Requires the ability to regularly lift objects up to 65+ lbs.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance in accordance with company policy.
- Repetitive motion required of the wrists, hands, or fingers occasionally throughout the workday.
- Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone and video conferencing throughout the workday.
- This is a full-time position expected to work 40 hours per week. Some hours outside of this, including nights and weekends, may be required.
