These challenges need the bold science we support, but they won't be solved by science alone.

We are looking for an Internal Audit Manager to join our team for a c. 6 months contract (end date: July.2025)

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

You will be working in the Internal Audit team, reporting to the Head of Internal Audit.

The Internal audit team assists the Audit and Risk Committee and Executive management to protect the assets, reputation and sustainability of the organisation. The team comprises of 14 team members, assisted by two co-source consulting firms. They perform audits relating to all of Wellcome's activities (e.g. funded institutions, Investments, Strategy, D&T, Finance, Wellcome Collection) as well as Wellcome's subsidiaries (Genome Research Limited, Premier Marinas, Urban & Civic and Leap) and partner institutions.

What will I be doing?

You will be responsible for delivering audits of Wellcome's charitable activities and funded institutions.

As an Internal Audit Manager, you will:

  • Lead on audits of funding recipients and Wellcome's research team as well as executing other audits, as determined by the Annual Audit Plan within agreed timescales and provide insight on risks, issues and themes across grant recipients and direct funding; identifying opportunities for improvement and how best to communicate these for action and impact.

  • Issue clear and concise reports detailing audit findings, risks and agreed recommendations. Work with management to develop workable solutions to audit findings.

  • Manage and plan the grant recipient internal audit activity to deliver the audit plan in an efficient manner - including cross functional activity and the use of third-party resources to deliver a quality audit.

  • Monitor and report on management's progress in implementing internal audit recommendations using agreed dashboards / reporting mechanisms as well as follow-up on and review management's progress in implementing internal audit recommendations.

  • Develop, evaluate, assess and co-ordinate a flexible, risk-based audit plan, which considers risks or control concerns identified by Wellcome management, and submit that plan to the Audit Committee for review and approval of Risk Based Internal Audit Plan.

  • Support the Head of Internal audit on strategic initiatives and projects.

  • Contribute to the creation and development of a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments manage team secondees.

Is this job for me?

You will be responsible for leading internal audits at Wellcome with a specific focus on funded institutions , to provide objective and independent assurance over their compliance with Wellcome's grant conditions and policies, and overall adequacy and effectiveness of their systems of risk management and internal controls.

We are looking for someone:

  • With Internal Audit experience.

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience, qualified accountant or Internal Audit / Risk Management Specialist, ideally gained in professional practice or in a large multinational corporate or charity/non-profit.

  • Strong understanding of audit principles and methodologies; controls and risk management principles; and good commercial acumen with some level of business exposure.

  • Strong planning and organising skills to be able to deliver reviews on time, on budget and in line with quality standards.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing teams (including co-sourced providers) in delivering reviews.

  • Demonstrated experience in presenting conclusions to senior stakeholders and landing potentially difficult messages.

  • Highest levels of integrity and able to effectively build business relationships.
