We are currently seeking a Blood Bank Clerk who will work every other weekend and every other holiday from 3p-11:30p.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Blood Bank Clerk will receive specimens and process orders according to procedure, assuring proper identification is maintained. In addition, the Blood Bank Clerk will:

Dispense blood products with proper labeling and clerical check to assure products are issued specifically as ordered for intended recipients.

Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. This requires the ability to obtain and interpret information to identify age-specific patient needs, and to provide the care needed.

Perform record searches on patients and file all records appropriately and will

pick up and deliver materials to the dumb waiter, shuttles, and pick-up sites.

Answer telephone and provide requested information. Pass information appropriately and obtains technical assistance for responses as necessary.

Participate in quality assurance as directed to assure ongoing improvement in departmental and individual performance.

Cooperate with supervisors and co-workers and maintain a good rapport with all departments. Present a professional, well-groomed appearance at all times in accordance with departmental dress code guidelines. Answers the telephone courteously and promptly.

Perform assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; report to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum of high school graduate with experience in specimen processing and computer entry.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of blood type incompatibilities.

Knowledge of specimen and registration, and product labeling and identification.

Ability to utilize the laboratory information system to obtain information.

Ability to interact professionally with co-workers, physicians, and nursing staff.

Skills in oral and written communication.
