Job Summary

This position is responsible for advising and supporting the IU Student Government, a university student organization dedicated to representing student voice throughout Indiana University Bloomington. This position will serve on a collaborative advising team for the IU Student Government and as the organization's full-time advisor.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with student leaders and campus colleagues, possess strong conflict management skills, and provide consistent organizational support of IU Student Government.
  • Provides individual advising support and leadership development to the leaders of the branches (Executive, Legislative, and Judicial) of IU Student Government.
  • Advises support includes regularly attending meetings, meeting individually with students involved in IUSG, and being present at IUSG events and activities.
  • Develops and implements trainings, team building efforts, and retreats in collaboration with IUSG student leadership.
  • Assists students in managing crisis and conflicts within the IUSG Serve as a liaison and/or facilitate relationships between IUSG and university administrators, faculty, and staff Advise and support the IU Student Government Treasurer maintain an organizational budget of $150,000.
  • Assists in the awarding of IU Foundation account-related funds and scholarships.
  • Facilitates financial processes.
  • Ensures organizational compliance with all university purchasing policies and procedures.
  • Advises Committee for Fee Review submission process every other year.
  • Provides guidance on university policies and procedures, and support reunion planning.
  • Instructs the First Year Internship Program for the second 8 weeks of each fall semester to support the growth and development of new IU Student Government members.
  • Supports IU Student Government leaders while they participate in the Association of Big Ten Student Leader meetings each fall and summer and the Big 10 on the Hill in Washington D.C. each spring in addition to any other IU Student Government related trips.
  • Works with IU Student Government leaders and alumni in partnership with the Alumni Association and IU Foundation staff to enhance alumni engagement efforts and increase donor cultivation.
  • Attends IU Student Government Congress and Executive Cabinet meetings.
  • Serves on campus wide committees for student initiatives based on the priorities of the Office of Student Life.
General Responsibilities
  • Develops and implements programs and initiatives geared at improving student engagement and involvement outcomes at the program, department/division, or campus level.
  • Interfaces directly with students, attending student life events and programs and gathering satisfaction feedback from student participants to implement into future student life initiatives and objectives.
  • Collaborates with staff in own department and other departments, as well as student organization leaders, on shared student life goals, often coordinating funding to sponsor student life initiatives.
  • Measures and evaluates effectiveness of student life initiatives against projected outcomes; regularly prepares reports and presents to stakeholders on effectiveness and to secure funding for initiatives moving forward.
  • Provides guidance to student organizations regarding operations, budget, leadership, activities, recruitment, registration, policies, and compliance. Promotes leadership and student development through advising of individual student leaders and volunteers. Contributes to formation, interpretation, and implementation of student organization policies.
  • Plans and coordinates communications and targeted outreach for student life initiatives to ensure student participation and inclusion.
  • May provide guidance to other Student Life Specialists; makes process recommendations to manager for improved delivery of service.
  • May serve on various campus or cross-functional committees to share student life best practices.
Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in public affairs, public health, counseling, social work, education, business, or related field
Preferred
  • Master's degree in higher education student affairs or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 5 years in student services, higher education, or related field
  • 2 years of experience advising student organizations and student leaders

  • Knowledge of current trends in student engagement, the legal landscape related to higher education, current issues related to colleges and universities as well as to IU campus policy and procedure, and general finance
  • Ability to relate well with a diverse population of college students ranging from first-year students to graduate and non-traditional-aged students, including international students, and to create environments that promote and embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Knowledge of student government organizations, knowledge of college and university settings
  • Demonstrates competency with Microsoft 365 products including Outlook, Teams, and Excel
Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

$60,000 annually

Work Hours

The position requires some evening and weekend work and will involve travel.
