Job Summary

Sustainable Housing Interns, working with campus residential program partners, will play a critical role in strengthening sustainable, low waste, and accessible residential sustainability initiatives across IU.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Residential Sustainability Promotion and Communication
  • Engages with IU First Year Experience, Hoosier Experience, O-Team, Residential Life, and other related groups to create sustainability programs for orientation, move-in, move-out, breaks, and daily campus life
  • Directly supports the Sustain Collins living-learning program partnership between the Integrated Program in the Environment, Collins LLC, and IU Sustainability through mentorship, program facilitation, and communication of first year students
  • Supports sustainable living promotion on campus through highlighting and raising topic awareness across residential spaces throughout the academic year
  • Investigates and supports strategies to reduce barriers to sustainable behaviors for campus residents
  • Sustainable Housing Operations
    • Assists with coordinating sustainable operations initiatives within residence life including waste reduction, energy and water conservation, phasing in reusables, equipment sharing programs, etc.
    • Runs conservation and waste diversion programs across residence halls - particularly during breaks and move out weeks
    • Compares standards to determine baseline performance and potential focus areas
  • Develops strategies to increase efficiency across daily operations
  • Assists IU Sustainability with the annual Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS) reporting in the following report categories: (10%)
  • Campus Engagement- EN1 Student Educators Program and EN4 Outreach Materials and Publications
  • Other Duties as Assigned
  • Assists with other sustainability programs and initiatives
  • Collaborates with student organizations
  • Grant writes and seeks other funding sources
  • Higher ed / sustainability professional development and training opportunities
  • Responsible for developing collaborative projects, coordinating planning efforts, and executing programming across a variety waste and energy reduction topics. Outreach programming will cover on-campus residential spaces, including Living-Learning Centers, and work closely with RHA leadership and Residence Life staff. This includes student engagement across existing communications platforms used in campus living spaces and events, as well as targeted efforts at key times during the year such as breaks and move-out.
  • Tracks and organizes data related to engagement programs and create descriptions for campus reporting / data needs.
  • Informs IU community members on sustainable residential practices and both inform decision making and implement changes towards sustainable housing best practices at Indiana University.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University
  • Must maintain student status for the duration of the internship
  • Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater
SKILLS

Required
  • Must be reliable and possess strong organizational skills
  • Strong desire and ability to learn
Preferred
  • Familiarity in principles of sustainability, campus housing, and/or sustainable living practices
  • Experience with MS Office applications, specifically Excel, Access, and Word
  • Strong writing and communication skills

Working Conditions / Demands

The employee is occasionally required to move about he campus and workspace. The employee must occasionally move up to 30 pounds. This position requires the ability to detect items close up and far away.

Laptop / computer use (e.g. Microsoft Office and email) and cellphones are required. Occasional use of printers/copiers, university data and communication software, and office provided supplies.

Work Location

Bloomington, Indiana

This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between 4 remote workdays and 1 in-person workday), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.
