Job description

Duties Serve as the Professor of Theater Planning in DMSPO and will contribute to the development, planning, administration, and teaching of core and elective courses in the Resident Education Program and associated curriculum. Develop lessons, teach, and assess core and elective courses related to military power, theater-level ops, senior military leadership, military history and strategy, operational design, and evolving defense capabilities/concepts. Engage in scholarship that advances knowledge in fields of the topics listed above or related topics. Counsel faculty and students on subjects related to history, military strategy and the application of military power in support of national security objectives. Coordinate with and provide subject matter expertise to external agencies on behalf of the U.S. Army War College. Connect with other institutions, civilian graduate programs, and national security think tanks. Teach Military Strategy and Campaign in the Resident Education Program and one elective equivalent. Serve as a faculty instructor for one seminar, faculty advisor for up to six students, and advisor for student strategic research projects. Contribute to the governance and extra-curricular opportunities of the War College with a range of internal and external service in support of the institutional mission including service on committees. Mentor junior faculty instructors and share expertise with peer faculty. Lead collaborative research teams comprised of students and faculty. Requirements Conditions of Employment Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret clearance. Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. This position has a travel requirement up to 10% of the time. Qualification Requirements: Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position; or Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field; or four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. In addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above, applicants will be rated on the following: SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Applicants will be rated on the criteria listed below: 1. Teaching ability at the undergraduate or graduate level. Experience at the graduate level is preferred. 2. Record of scholarship relevant to the DMSPO curriculum, as established in paragraph (1) of duties listed above. This includes peer reviewed publications, on-line engagements, and other media. 3. Skilled in strategic direction, war plans, global integration, campaign plans, campaign design, theater strategy, and/or operations assessment as evidenced by an established record of superior professional experience and networks. 4. Ability to collaborate with and develop the skills of faculty colleagues in the conceptualization, design, and preparation of lesson plans for others to teach. 5. Master's degree in a relevant field such as military history, political science, international relations, security studies, strategic studies, or a related field with a PhD or equivalent evidence of original scholarly research and scholarship consistent with the rank of assistant professor is preferred. 6. Ability and desire to work collegially with diverse (military, civilian, foreign) graduate students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
